Mountain Memory

Mountain Memory was commissioned by the Carolina Regional Theatre in 1974 as a theatrical way to showcase two hundred years of Southern Appalachian history.  The play was originally titled Appalachia Sounding, but was titled Mountain Memory when it was produced at Appalachian State University in 1995.  As is typical of Linney’s plays, the cast is small and the setting simple, and Linney used what the characters talk about rather than distinct sets and costume changes to signify the passing of time.  Unlike his other plays, Linney closed Mountain Memory without an ending, leaving the audience to think about the future of the Appalachian region.
