Whitener taught history and social studies at Appalachian State since 1932, and served as dean of the College from 1955 to 1964. Plemmons served as president from 1955 to 1969.

White was one of the members of the General Assembly to support the bill to create Appalachian Training School as a state-sponsored institution in 1903.
