Description

This image shows Daniel Jay Whitener and William Howard Plemmons standing next to a graduating woman after one of the commencements at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1950s. Whitener taught history and social studies at Appalachian State since 1932, and served as dean of the College from 1955 to 1964. Plemmons served as Appalachian State president from 1955 to 1969. Commencements were held in the winter, spring, and summer and took place in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955.
