The Board of Trustees have been a governing body of the College since it became a state-sponsored institution in 1903. The Board of Trustees was formed of members representing regional areas of Western North Carolina and managed Appalachian policies, finances, and development until 1971, when it became part of the University of North Carolina system. It now oversees Appalachian State under the University System's Board of Governors.

Randall taught at Appalachian State from 1957 to 1989, and Professor Derrick from 1946 to 1976. The Department of Biology aimed to provide cultural background in life sciences, prepare biology teachers, and train biologists, and included courses on animal observation, zoology, and graduate classes in animal ecology. It is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and maintains a greenhouse, a herbarium, and several land tracts located on and off campus.

This image shows J. D. Rankin, professor of English and dean of the College, mowing a lawn in Boone, NC, during the summer of 1961. Rankin was a professor of English at Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929), and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), from 1921 to 1929, and served as dean of the college from 1929 to June 1955. He served as interim president after President Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955. He died in 1966.

He was a professor of English at Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929), and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), from 1921 to 1929, and became dean of the college in 1929, serving in this capacity until June 1955. He served as interim president after Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955. He died in 1966.

The donation was to the Heartline Stadium Fund, which sought to raise $160,000 to aid in completion of the stadium.
