James Daniel Rankin, 1961

Description

This image shows J. D. Rankin, professor of English and dean of the College, mowing a lawn in Boone, NC, during the summer of 1961. Rankin was a professor of English at Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929), and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), from 1921 to 1929, and served as dean of the college from 1929 to June 1955. He served as interim president after President Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955. He died in 1966.
