James D. Rankin and William Howard Plemmons, circa 1955

Description

This image shows President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) and President Emeritus J. D. Rankin (1955) sitting on chairs at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1950s. Rankin was a professor of English at Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929), and Appalachian State Teachers College from 1921 to 1929, and served as dean of the College from 1929 to 1955. He served as interim president after Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955, and Plemmons was appointed the next president by the Board of Trustees.
