Derrick was a vocal advocate for conservation through tree farms and owned over four hundred acres planted with popular and white pine trees. Alfred Adams, circa 1975

This image shows Alfred Adams, banker and chairman of the Board of Directors of Northwestern Bank in the town of Boone, NC. Adams supported the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University (1967-current) with scholarships and donations, and received an honorary alumnus award from Appalachian State in 2001. In 1992, the Alfred T. Adams Professorship of Banking Endowment was established in the Walker College of Business. The $500,000 endowment was to provide funds for salary supplements, research, travel, and secretarial support.

Founded in 1971, the Appalachian Consortium was a non-profit organization of Appalachian universities and other educational organizations whose goal was to promote and preserve Appalachian culture and heritage. Later in his career Dr. Buxton was to become President of Lees - McRae College.
