This image shows a group of boys cutting a hole into a tree during a biology class taught by Professor I. W. Carpenter at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1960s. Carpenter began teaching in the Department of Biology in 1953. He served as chairman from 1973 to 1979 and retired in 1986.
