Each desk includes two lamps with gas nozzles in the base. The Rankin Science Building included classrooms and laboratoriesfor the Departments of Biology, Geology, Chemistry, and Physics. It was completed in 1963 and dedicated to Dean Emeritus James Daniel Rankin.

New River Light and Power, circa 1967

This image shows an employee of New River Light and Power Company in Boone, NC, standing by a NRLP truck in front of Plemmons Student Union, built 1967, with a man at Appalachian State University (1967-current). New River Light and Power was started two miles south of Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) on the Edminsten Farm in 1915, supplying power to the School and six individual customers in Boone, NC. The company no longer generates its own electricity, instead purchasing power from Blue Ridge Electric of Lenoir, NC. The utility is today a non-profit subsidiary of Appalachian State University and serves the area generally within the town limits of Boone. On the right is Grant Ayers, Manager of New River Light and Power Company.

It was renovated in the mid-1920s for the Home Economics Department, which was located there until 1962, when the L. S. Dougherty Hall was completed. It was demolished in 1967 for the construction of B. B. Dougherty Administration Building, completed 1968.

This image shows the second Administration Building for Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in 1966. The building was built in 1924 and was destroyed by fire in 1966. The Administration Building housed administrative offices, an auditorium, classrooms, and faculty offices for the Departments of English, Foreign Languages, and Social Studies. The building was originally located on the Promenade, facing southeast, approximately where the first Belk Library, built 1968, is located.

The smokestack was removed when the plant stopped using coal as a heat source. A new tower/stack had to be constructed twenty years later to comply with EPA emissions regulations. Cars can be seen parked on Appalachian Street, and a crane is visible in the background.

At the end of the table, turned and looking at the camera is Stephanie Flynt. Lucy Brock Nursery School was built in 1965. It included a lab for Home Economics majors, a play area, observation booth, isolation room, and could accommodate up to twenty 3-4 year old children. It is located near the center of campus, and focuses on child development research.
