Description

This image shows the speakers at spring convocation shaking hands with each other on stage in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on April 16, 1958. The College Band plays in the foreground. On stage, President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) can be seen second from left, and Vice-President David Barnard Dougherty (1955-1965) stands on the right. Spring convocation included attendance by the State Board of Education and a speech by J. Harris Purks, the executive secretary of the Board.
