Convocation, 1957, photo 4

Description

This image shows the fall convocation ceremony held in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, in November 1957 at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). The college choir and Board of Trustees stand on the stage, while the band plays at the base of the stage. Audience members can be seen standing in the foreground. The convocation ceremony included speaker Paul A. Johnston, director of the Department of Administration of North Carolina, and guest J. Kemp Doughton, speaker of the House of Representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly, who presented a tribute to the late Blanford Barnard Dougherty. There were also performances by the college band and college choir, and an invocation read by President Emeritus J. D. Rankin. The Appalachian State Board of Trustees took an oath of office administered by Boone Mayor Gordon H. Winkler.
