This image shows a speaker during the fall convocation ceremony held in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, in November 1957 at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Behind the speaker sits the Board of Trustees, including President Emeritus James D. Rankin, sixth from the left, and President William Howard Plemmons, right. The convocation ceremony included speaker Paul A. Johnston, director of the Department of Administration of North Carolina, and guest J. Kemp Doughton, speaker of the House of Representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly, who presented a tribute to the late Blanford Barnard Dougherty. There were also performances by the college band and college choir, and an invocation read by President Emeritus J. D. Rankin. The Appalachian State Board of Trustees took an oath of office administered by Boone Mayor Gordon H. Winkler.
