Description
This image shows an employee helping students with a mechanical reading device known as a controlled reader in the Reading Center at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on January 25, 1957. The device allowed a metal sheet to be pulled down a page to allow the dyslexic users to focus on lines. Books are shelved on the back wall, and a large insect nest hands off the wall to the left. The Reading Center provided diagnostic and remedial services for Appalachian students and the region in general. It also served as a laboratory for students in the teacher preparation program.
