This image shows a group of attendees of the commencement ceremony at Appalachian State University (1967-current) standing outside in May 1979. Newly appointed Chancellor John Edwin Thomas (1979-1993) stands on the left, next to a student ambassador, and a man in religious garb stands on the right. Commencement was held in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Second from the left is Dr. J. D. Richardson, Chairperson of the Department of Management an Marketing. The man in the religious garb is Mr. Robert Young, Pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church of Boone.
