This image shows one of the commencement speakers standing behind a podium, with Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) and a student standing to the right, at the commencement ceremony at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in May 1977. Commencement was held at the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Other commencement speakers are visible in the background, and the wall includes a painting of a bull's head over an outline of West Virginia and a painting of Yosef, Appalachian State's mascot. Behind the podium is Dr. Richard Soren, Dean of the College of Business. Seated on the right is Dr. Nicholas Erneston, Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Seated second on the right is Dr. William C. Strickland.
