This image shows Chancellor John E. Thomas (1979-1993) shaking hands and handing a degree to a student during the August 1981 commencement at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Other commencement speakers are visible in the background. Commencement was held in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Seated on the right is Dr. Richard Sorensen, Dean of the college of Business. Seated between Chancellor Thomas and the student is Dr. Harvey Durham, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
