This image shows a speaker at the May 1981 commencement at Appalachian State University (1967-current). A man stands behind a podium bearing the Appalachian State seal. Wall reads, "W. Carolina," and includes a painting of the Western Carolina mascot, the catamount. Commencement was held in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Standing behind the podium is Dr. Donald Sink, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. First on the left in the background is Dr. Nicholas Erneston, and next to him is Dr. Frank Bruno, Dean of the College of Learning and Human Development.
