This image shows a professor being awarded an honorary doctorate by Appalachian State Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) and former Appalachian State President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969). The ceremony was part of the 1971 commencement in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Wey stands on the left while Plemmons fixes the professor's doctoral hood on the right.
