Title
Telephone Services, Centrex assistance
Description
Up through the 1960s, Appalachian State University (1967-current) used a switchboard telephone system. Transfer calls and incoming calls were routed through the University switchboard operator, who manually directed the calls to their destination. In 1972, the system was retired in exchange for a more efficient Centrex system, where calls would go directly to individual offices or dormitories. Seen in this image is the Centrex operator, who answered and directed calls through the University's main number. All University phone numbers were published and reachable through listings in the Boone telephone directory. A vertical rolodex can be seen in the background.
