Title
Shulls Mill School Renovation, 1963, photo 1
Description
This image shows some of the people instrumental in renovating the Shulls Mill School, built 1884, as a monument to early school teachers in Western North Carolina. The school building had been donated to Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in 1963 and, along with the Southern Appalachian Historical Association, Appalachian State sought donations to renovate and preserve the building. Seen on the left is D. J. Whitener, dean of college at Appalachian State and chairman of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association. On the right is David Barnard Dougherty, vice president and comptroller at Appalachian State from 1955-1965. Second on the right is Dr. Guy Angel, Superintendent of Watauga Public School System. Also involved were Boone businessman W. R. Winkler, Sr., and Mayor Wade Brown.
