This image shows David Barnard Dougherty accepting a certificate of merit from Watauga County Schools for Blanford Barnard Dougherty. Shulls Mill School was one of the original schools taught at by Blanford Barnard Dougherty, co-founder and co-principal of Watauga Academy (1899-1903), superintendent of Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), president of Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929) and president of Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) until 1955. Seen in this image are two of Dougherty's nephews, Appalachian State history professor Edwin Shull Dougherty (second from left), and David Barnard Dougherty (second from right), Appalachian State vice-president and comptroller from 1955-1965. On the left is Mr. Howard Cottrell, Manager of the Bookstore. On the right is Dr. Guy Angel, Superintendent of the Watauga County School System.
