Title

Homecoming Court, 1956, crowning

Description

This image shows the crowning ceremony of the Homecoming queen at College Field in 1956. Queen Carol Jean Preslar stands in the middle being handed a bouquet of flowers by Myra Lippard, Homecoming queen of 1955. To her right are two members of the Homecoming court, Sybil Thomas and Carolyn Medlin. The band and onlookers can be seen in the background, along with Smith-Wright Hall, built 1940, and the second Administration Building, built 1924. Part of the hood of a car and a photographer can be seen in the foreground. Homecoming was an annual event at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), including plays, a parade, a dance, a football game, and the crowning of the Homecoming queen. Part of this image appears in the 1957 Rhododendron (p. 45).
