Description

This image shows a freshman orientation session in the auditorium of the second Administration Building, built 1924. Orientation included welcoming speeches, placement testing, instruction, religious programs, and campus fellowship. Out of over 1,700 enrollees in fall 1955, 537 freshman and 118 transfers entered Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), compared to only 441 freshmen in 1954. Enrollment had grown steadily after World War II, part due to the G. I. Bill. 370 veterans were attending Appalachian in 1955.
