Title

Students in Gymnasium, circa 1954

Description

This image shows the inside of one of the gymnasiums at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). In 1954, that included the Women's Gymnasium, built 1924, and the Men's Gymnasium, built 1934. Students are seen seated on bleachers positioned against the walls, with several windows behind them. The second level of the gymnasium is visible at the top left of the image. Senior Jean Hopkins, graduated 1954, can be seen seated in the front row, fourth from the left. Some students are seated on the floor, with most students watching or conversing with other students. Few appear to be watching anything occurring on the basketball court in front of them.
