Extension Class Registration, 1955

Description

In Spring 1955, the 2000th student registered in a regular session at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), marking the largest enrollment during a single session in its history. This image shows the 2000th student, Hubert Morrow, a teacher in the Elkin school system, enrolling in an Appalachian graduate extension class for the spring term. Seated at the desk is registrar Herman R. Eggers, registrar from 1940 to 1970. Standing to the right of Morrow is student James Everidge (right) and Ben Hunicutt (left). The full enrollment for that term was 2,065 students. Extension classes were held at off-campus facilities, where students could complete up to one six weeks term per school year. It was offered for graduate or senior-level work. In 1955 spring quarter, off-campus extension courses were offered on Saturdays at Wingate Junior College at Wingate and in Elkin, as well as Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs. Book on desk reads, "Audio Visual Methods in Teaching."
