Associate Professor Emerita of Mathematical Sciences Frances Stone Fulmer (June 20, 1925-), was born in Inman, South Carolina, the daughter of Annie Williams and Milon Gardiner Stone. Fulmer attended Inman High School and graduated in 1942. She was married to William Edmund Fulmer, who died June 24,1999. The Fulmers had three daughters: Anne F. Plage (May 29, 1954-), Linda F. Sheer (October 29, 1955-), and Janet F. Gilbert Quly26, 1958-). Anne is a 1976 graduate of Wake Forest University, with a major in Spanish. She received her M.A. degree from the University of Kentucky in 1981. She holds a real estate broker's license. Anne is married to Robert Glenn Plage, an alumnus of Wake Forest University and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Washington, District of Columbia. Robert is a dentist in Wilmington, North Carolina. The couple has two children, Caitlin and Michael. Linda is an alumna of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, having received both bachelor's and master's degrees in education there. She is a teacher in an elementary school in Chapel Hill and has one daughter, Catherine Jann. Janet is a certified dental assistant, having completed the Dental Assisting Program at the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill and is also a registered dental hygienist with a degree from the Dental Hygiene Program at Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, North Carolina. She is a practicing dental hygienist in Wilmington, North Carolina. In August, 1982, Janet married James Martin (Marty) Gilbert, an alumnus of Appalachian State University. Marty is president of Gilbert Enterprises, which includes a self-service car wash and convenience store. Fulmer received her B.A. degree in mathematics from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1946. From 1946 to 1951, she was a mathematics and general science teacher at Jenkins Junior High School, Spartanburg, South Carolina. During this time, Fulmer studied at the University of South Carolina. In 1951 she accompanied her husband to Missouri, where she taught high school mathematics for two years while Mr. Fulmer was earning a doctorate from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Fulmer was awarded the M.A. degree from Appalachian State University in 1961 and subsequently became an instructor in the Department of Mathematics at Appalachian. During the academic year 1970-71, she was a participant in the TTT Program at Appalachian and in May 1971 was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Study. Professionally, Fulmer held memberships in the Mathematics Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Fulmer is a member of the Boone First Baptist Church, where her participation on committees has included Christian Life, Finance, Personnel, Scholarship, and Worship and Evangelism. She is a member of the Blue Ridge Garden Club. Fulmer retired from her position at Appalachian State University in 1986 after twenty-five years of service to the institution.
