This image shows two high school students sitting in front of typewriters during a summer course in the Upward Bound Program at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in July 1972. A man can be seen watching on the right and a woman sits at a table in the foreground. Upward Bound is an federally funded academic program for disadvantaged high school students that was first funded at Appalachian State in 1972. It offers weekly tutoring sessions, academic counseling, classroom instruction, college entrance exam preparation, study skills workshops, and a comprehensive six-week summer session at Appalachian State University that includes college-level coursework at on-campus facilities.
