This image shows William Friday, president of the University of North Carolina System, and North Carolina Governor James E. Holshouser, Jr. (1973-1977) standing together at a meeting of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. William Friday is standing on the right. The Board of Governors is the main governing body of the sixteen University of North Carolina institutions, and elects each of the institutions' chancellors, vice chancellors, senior academic and administrative officers, and faculty with permanent tenure.
