This image shows Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System standing in a board room at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in October 1973. The Board of Governors formed in 1971 with the establishment of the University of North Carolina System, and serves as the main governing body of the sixteen member institutions. It also elects each of the chancellors, vice chancellors, senior academic and administrative officers, and faculty with permanent tenure.
