This image shows James D. Rankin sitting with student Jean Rankin, looking at a book at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1950s. James D. Rankin, seen standing second from the right, served as a professor of English at Appalachian State from 1921 to 1929, and became dean of the college in 1929, serving in this capacity until June 1955. He served as interim president after Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955. Jean Rankin was the 1958 homecoming queen.
