Description

This image shows James D. Rankin and Cratis Williams greeting guests at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1950s. Rankin, seen standing second from the right, served as a professor of English at Appalachian State from 1921 to 1929, and became dean of the college in 1929, serving in this capacity until June 1955. Williams began teaching at Appalachian State in 1942, and served as dean of the Graduate School from 1956 until 1975. He was acting chancellor for Academic Affairs in 1974, and served as assistant chancellor from 1976 to 1979, and interim chancellor following Herbert Walter Wey's retirement in 1979.
