Description

This image shows three men standing in the Department of Speech at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Standing on the left is Dr. Charles Palmer and standing on the right is Dr. Charles Porterfield, holding a plaque. The bulletin board in the background reads, "Speech and Hearing Clinic." The Department of Speech was located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and is now part of the Department of Language, Reading and Exceptionalities in the College of Education. It offers undergraduate and graduate work in communication disorders. Graduates can be certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the North Carolina Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction.
