Description
This image shows a car with the ASU Dark Sky Observatory logo on the side at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1986-87. The Dark Sky Observatory was originally housed in Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, now known as the Rankin Science Observatory, and managed by the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. A separate Dark Sky Observatory was opened in 1981 twenty miles northeast of Boone, NC. The Department offers an undergraduate degrees in applied physics and graduate degrees in engineering physics, as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 128).

Line 5; As a result of heightened interest in astronomy and astronomical research the Dark Sky Observatory was established in 1981 on property gifted to the university in 1943. It is located 26 miles northeast of the main campus. It is now the site of six research telescopes and university faculty and students perform research during every clear from evening to morning twilight.
