Military Science, commissioning ceremony, 1976, photo 1

Description

This image shows a Dr. James (Jim) Jackson shaking hands with a cadet in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in spring of 1976. The cadets were being commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army after completing the ROTC program. The Army ROTC banner can be seen in the background. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard. The man standing on the right is Dr. James Jackson, Dean of the College of Continuing Education.
