This image shows a student typing code into a computer while viewing the readout on a television set in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in April 1978. An acoustically coupled modem can be seen attached to the keyboard. The Department of Mathematic Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree program with concentrations in applied mathematics, general mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. The graduate program leads to Master of Science degrees in mathematics or mathematics education with teacher certification.
