This image shows Professor A. R. Smith speaking behind a podium to a group being awarded the A. R. Smith Chemistry Scholarships in September 1978 at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Both students and faculty can be seen sitting in the audience on the left. A. R. Smith was a former chemistry professor at Appalachian State since 1921 until 1959-1960. The Department of Chemistry exists within the College of Arts and Sciences, and aims to provide training for future chemists, basic understanding of the principles of chemistry, and chemistry teachers. The Department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society. The A. R. Smith Scholarships are awarded to chemistry majors at Appalachian State.
