This image shows the recipients of the A. R. Smith Chemistry Awards posing for a photograph in September 1977 at Appalachian State University (1967-current). A. R. Smith, former chemistry professor at Appalachian State since 1921 until 1959-1960, is seen standing in the middle. The Department of Chemistry exists within the College of Arts and Sciences, and aims to provide training for future chemists, basic understanding of the principles of chemistry, and chemistry teachers. The Department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society. The A. R. Smith Scholarships are awarded to chemistry majors at Appalachian State.
