Description

This image shows the presidential inauguration of Dr. Herbert Walter Wey in 1969 at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Wey stands in academic dress, holding the Appalachian State seal in front of his head. Wey followed William Howard Plemmons, president from 1955 to 1969, and served from 1969 to 1979. He was the first chancellor of Appalachian State University when it became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1971. He previously served as chairman of the Department of Education in 1955, as well as serving as dean of the Graduate School until 1957, when he began working at the University of Miami. While chancellor, Appalachian State increased enrollment, constructed several buildings, and started the College of Business. He retired in 1979 and died in 1999.
