Description

This image shows the awarding of an honorary doctorate degree during the 1974 commencement ceremony in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) hands a framed doctorate to the honoree. Other commencement speakers are visible standing in the background, and the wall in the background reads, " No Smoking". On the right and receiving the honorary doctorate is Governor James Holshouser. In the middle is Ms. Margaret Gragg, Professor in the College of Education.
