Title

Big Sister Little Sister Party, 1955, photo 2

Description

This image shows one of the events at the Big Sister-Little Sister Party held in the Women's Gymnasium, built 1924, on September 21, 1955, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). A line of girls can be seen standing in front of a crowd of attendees. It was a theme party held at the beginning of the fall quarter, where upperclassmen posed as big sisters for freshmen, posing as little sisters, who attended the party dressed as various child characters. It included a talent contest, games, recitations, songs, and a dramatic skit. Big sisters were also intended to help guide the new freshmen students through their first year at Appalachian State. It was sponsored by members of the YWCA. Sign above the basketball goal reads, "The Big Top," which was the theme for that year. This image appears in the September 30, 1955, edition of "The Appalachian" (p. 2).
