Description
This image shows football player Jack Groce standing with a woman during the football banquet being held in Welborn Cafeteria, built 1925, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on December 11, 1952. Groce was awarded the Most Valuable Player award, and given a watch. The banquet was attended by around 200 people, including faculty, staff, administrators, and students. Awards were given to outstanding members of the Mountaineer Football Team for 1952-53, and Coach E. C. Duggins distributed letters to deserving team members. The guest speaker for the event was Charles Elledge, principal of Marion High School. Dancing with Mr. Groce was his soon-to-be wife, Virginia.
