Description

Freshman Orientation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) included placement testing, instruction, and welcoming addresses. Welcoming addresss were held in the auditorium of the Administration Building, built 1924, and included William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969), president of Appalachian State, Daniel Jay Whitener, dean of the college, Barbara Stephenson, dean of women, and faculty. This image shows the stage where the administration and faculty members are seated, with students sitting in the auditorium in the foreground. President Plemmons can be seen seated in the middle behind the podium, with Deans Whitener and Stephenson to his left. This image appears in the 1959 Rhododendron (p. 26).
