Description

This image shows three library patrons at a table in D. D. Dougherty Library, built 1935, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). In 1956, the library boasted a 150,00 book capacity, with 68,00 actual volumes. Books can be seen lining shelves in the background. A woman can be seen standing, looking through a dictionary on a rotating base, while two men sit at the table looking at open books. On the left is Herbert Walter Wey, who served terms as principal of Appalachian High School (1938-1967), head of the Department of Education, and dean of the Graduate School until 1957, when he began working at the University of Miami. He returned in 1969 to serve as president and chancellor of Appalachian State until his retirement in 1979. On the right is Mr. Gordon Winkler, Mayor of Boone.
