Title
Freshman Orientation, 1958, placement tests, photo 1
Description
This image shows the freshman class of 1959 sitting in D. D. Dougherty Library, built 1935, waiting to take placement tests as part of freshman orientation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). All incoming freshmen and transfer students were required to attend orientation given at the beginning of the fall term, which included welcoming addresses, club activities, registration, and placement tests. The tests ensured incoming students had adequate proficiencies to embark on college-level study and if any remedial courses were necessary. This image appears in the 1959 Rhododendron (p. 18).
