Description

This image shows a group of students performing a folk dance as part of the May Day festivities in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on May 3, 1958. May Day festival was part of the first Spring Festival, held from May 1-3, 1958. Participants included alumni, high school students, and folk dance teams. The festival had a folk theme, and included performances by Richard Dyer-Bennet, the folk opera "Down in the Valley," the College Choir, Orchestra, Modern Dance Club, and Playcrafters. It was directed by Virginia Linney, Nicholas Erneston, Joy Kirchner, and Mary Ruth Johnston.
