Description
This image shows two groups dancing in circles in a folk dance performance as part of the May Day festivities in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on May 3, 1958. The May Day Court can be seen seated in the background, with queen Carolyn Wall seated in the middle. May Day festival was part of the first Spring Festival, held from May 1-3, 1958. Participants included alumni, high school students, and folk dance teams. The festival had a folk theme, and included performances by Richard Dyer-Bennet, the folk opera "Down in the Valley," the College Choir, Orchestra, Modern Dance Club, and Playcrafters. It was directed by Virginia Linney, Nicholas Erneston, Joy Kirchner, and Mary Ruth Johnston. This image appears in the 1960 Rhododendron (p. 115).
