Description

This image shows speaker J. Harris Purks, executive secretary of the State Board of Education, speaking behind a podium in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, during spring convocation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on April 16, 1958. Other speakers are seated on the left and right of the podium, and the Choir is in the background. The College Band sits at the base of the stage, and the audience can be seen in the foreground. Spring convocation also included attendance by the State Board of Education. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954 and were held the beginning of each term.
