This image shows President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969), center, and Vice-President Daniel Barnard Dougherty (1955-1965), standing outside on the Promenade across the street from "Three Coins" Park with members of the State Board of Education at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on April 16, 1958. Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, visible in the background. The Board of Education was on campus to attend spring convocation, which included attendance by the State Board of Education and a speech by J. Harris Purks, the executive secretary of the Board.
