This image shows one of the speakers from the Alumni Association at the fall convocation ceremony at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) at Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, on October 17, 1958. J. D. Rankin can be seen seated on the left, next to President W. H. Plemmons. Members of the College Band can be seen in the foreground on the left. The 1958 fall convocation theme was Homecoming. Speakers included John V. Idol, president of the Alumni Association, John Corey, executive secretary of the Alumni Association, Mrs. Maxie Edmisten, Dean of Women, Dr. J. D. Rankin, Appalachian State president emeritus, and W. H. Plemmons, president. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954.
