Description

This image shows students filing out of the Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, after the fall convocation ceremony at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on October 17, 1958. The 1958 fall convocation theme was Homecoming. Speakers included John V. Idol, president of the Alumni Association, John Corey, executive secretary of the Alumni Association, Mrs. Maxie Edmisten, Dean of Women, Dr. J. D. Rankin, Appalachian State president emeritus, and W. H. Plemmons, president. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954. This image appears in the 1959 Rhododendron (p. 2).
